03/31 Hypothyroidism In Newtown
Hypothyroidism is a complication caused by the insufficient production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland, which has a bow tie or butterfly shape, is located in the neck. Two important thyroid hormones – triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are produced by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is capable of absorbing iodine from supplements or food and combining it with tyrosine, an amino acid. The thyroid then converts the iodine and tyrosine into the key hormones T3 and T4. These hormones help get oxygen into cells and play an important role in a persons metabolism. Underactive thyroid symptoms may include depression, constipation, fatigue, coarse hair and brittle nails, muscle weakness, and pain in the joints. Various factors can lead to thyroid problems such as iodine deficiency, Hashimotos thyroiditis, thyroid surgery, exposure to radiation and certain medicines.
